and then they proceeded to be the worst at their jobs for the next 20 years
No no, you don’t get it. Jesse and James are the absolute best there is at their jobs, but they have no idea what their jobs are.
They think that they’re thieves, agents of an elite criminal group led by Giovanni, stealing rare pokemon and advanced technology and such. And there might have been a time this actually was their jobs. In the first season or two, they frequently get angry phone calls about how they’ve fucked everything up, or get their expense account cut off because they have literally never turned a profit on their criminal enterprises and constantly procure and then lose/destroy expensive and elaborate devices.
But then the world came within a hair’s breadth of being destroyed, several times, and Jesse, James, and their weird cat rescued everybody. As terrible as they’ve always been at criminal endeavors of any kind, when the apocalypse approaches and they’re forced to step up, they’re really fucking good at saving the day.
And Giovanni is over here like… if the planet is destroyed, or time/space becomes unrecognizable, or civilization collapses, there’s no way for me to run a profitable criminal enterprise anymore. I need this planet, because it’s where I keep all my stuff. And I don’t pretend to understand the why of it, but these couple of bumbling nutcases that I should have fired years ago seem to be an important component of that? Somehow? So you gotta stop thinking about them in terms of acquisitions and start considering them… loss prevention. As in, even if you waste a million dollars a month on giant cat-faced robots and a vast array of fancy ball gowns and they never turn a profit, they are preventing all of your assets from going away at the same time because of something you can’t do anything about.
And that’s the great secret behind Team Rocket. These guys aren’t thieves, they’re professional superheroes (sponsored by organized crime). Of course, nobody ever bothered to tell them that.
“To protect the world from devastation…”
Plus, as is frequently pointed out: Jesse and James are good at every other job EXCEPT Team Rocket. They’re actually smart businesspeople and run successful food and merchandise stands and are great salespeople.
Hell, even in Team Rocket situations where they’re not chasing after Pikachu they’ve done better.
It’s just their Achilles Heel is one damn OP rodent.
pretty sure giovanni keeps them on so he can commit insurance fraud by giving them tech insured for way more than what was paid for it so when it inevitably gets destroyed he gets a nice check.
I’m accepting all of these responses actually

Teachers have tried this and are amazed when their classes don’t go feral like in the book. It’s almost as if the book was supposed to be satire and not a treaty on the nature of humanity.
there’s a timeskip
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
after losing control of the signal fire there’s a FUCKING TIMESKIP and when the next chapter starts everyone’s hair is several inches longer and their clothes have rotted to shreds and they’re still just kind of chilling!!!!
IT TAKES THE TERRIBLE IMPERIALISM MIND-POISONED EXCESSIVELY BRITISH BOYS IN THE ACTUAL BOOK SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMMIT A SINGLE ACT OF INTENTIONAL VIOLENCE, EVEN THE ONE (1) CHILD WRITTEN AS AN ACTUAL SOCIOPATH
AND then when they DO turn on each other it is because
THERE’S AN UNSPECIFIED WORLD WAR HAPPENING
AND A PILOT’S CORPSE CRASH LANDS ON THE ISLAND POST-DOGFIGHT AND THE CHILDREN MISTAKE THE PARACHUTE FOR A MONSTER AND SPIRAL INTO PARANOIA
BECAUSE CHILDREN INHERIT THE LEGACY AND TRAUMA OF VIOLENCE FROM THE ADULTS WAGING WAR AROUND THEM
HURR DURR IN THE REAL WORLD IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN LIKE IN LORD OF THE FLIES -
IT DIDN’T HAPPEN THAT WAY IN LORD OF THE FLIES EITHER YOU JUST HAVEN’T READ IT SINCE HIGH SCHOOL IF EVER AND DON’T REMEMBER WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE GODDAMN BOOK
#tbf the dude wrote it to be a dick
yes. yes he did. i’m also gonna direct you to the real life ‘lord of the flies’ which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until they’d cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. here’s a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.

i read about this in rutger bregman’s human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you don’t want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.
ok WOW definitely consider reading the article, these boys–Sione, Stephen, Kolo, David, Luke and Mano–showed tremendous cooperation as well as the ability to share and farm scarce resources, and to care for each other in times of sickness and injury. Not only that, by the time they were finally rescued, “the boys had set up a small commune with food garden, hollowed-out tree trunks to store rainwater, a gymnasium with curious weights, a badminton court, chicken pens and a permanent fire, all from handiwork, an old knife blade and much determination.”
They were all between the ages of 13 and 16 at the time of the shipwreck. And from the very beginning they recognized the importance of co-operation and resource-sharing–starting with sharing rainwater equally while they were adrift for 8 days without food or fresh water.
And here is an interview with one of the survivors (Sione Totau, now 73 years old)

Things I learned from the comments
- She’s a patron saint of rape and abuse victims
- She took a vow a chastity
- A low born guy demanded her to be with him and she turned him down
- For this she was imprisoned and tortured. This is how she lost her breasts (details not required)
- She was repeatedly raped.
- The Catholic Church regards her as a virgin for her peity despite the rape. (No matter your views on virginity this is a pretty interesting statement)
- She was sentenced to death to burn at the stake but was saved by an earthquake
- In her holiday people make titty cupcakes
I didn’t know she existed and now I think she’s a pretty rad woman. I would hesitate calling her a protofeminist as some often do with amazing women in history but she is pretty cool. Also she’s still very relevant today as women are still treated the way she was.
other things i learned: damn historic artists drew a woman with her own tits on a plate with Cleavage and prominent nip nops???
Get yourself a titty cupcake tomorrow
why did historic artists draw a woman with her own tits on a plate with Cleavage and prominent nip nops?
because boobs are cool, because bad women’s anatomy, or other?
The *fancy* reason is because she was healed by Saint Peter when she went to heaven/the art is meant to depict her soul, which would be unblemished by her torture.
But also probably because boobs are cool, at least for some of these.
Wait! Here’s a recipe for the cakes:
Which calls for vanilla extract!

I miss Jason
Honestly, that scale actually makes perfect sense, especially for a sixty person dance crew. You want people who are really good at what they do, but not who will attempt to stand out and affect the cohesion of the group. Too fresh and not fresh enough are both negative qualities. And Jason is just saying that an 8 represents the ideal amount. That’s actually pretty deep, and suggests a collectivist instinct in him.
And yes, that means that Jason is effectively saying that Michael is too smart for his own good, to his detriment.
I saw this and went “oh, so it works like the pH scale”… then realized that means that he’s calling Michael basic.
He’s also inadvertently practicing Virtue Ethics. The theory of virtue ethics states that every virtue, like generosity, exists on a spectrum somewhere between two vices, like stinginess and being so generous you harm yourself.

Julie Andrews burns the President of Warner Brothers during her Best Actress acceptance speech for Mary Poppins at the 1965 Golden Globes
Perhaps one of the biggest scandals of Golden Age Hollywood was the decision by Jack Warner, president of Warner Brothers, to cast Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle in the movie adaptation of My Fair Lady instead of Julie Andrews. Julie originated the role of Eliza on Broadway and in London - which has been heralded as one of the most difficult Broadway characters of all time - for three straight years, stunning audiences around the world. To provide some modern perspective, My Fair Lady was the Hamilton of its time, selling millions of copies of the Broadway recording in a matter of months, every single Broadway and London show sold-out for its entire record-breaking run. To everyone at the time, Julie was Eliza Doolittle, so to see her passed up for the movie adaptaion sent shockwaves through Hollywood. However, because Jack passed on Julie for the role, Walt Disney was able to cast her in Mary Poppins, for which she won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar. Julie stated of the Golden Globes night: “I suddenly realized that if Jack Warner had asked me to do My Fair Lady, which I missed out on, I would never have been able to do Mary Poppins.” Her dig - deft, quick, and spoken in her classically sweet nature - took enormous courage, delivering it to the most powerful man in Hollywood in front of all his peers. A member of the audience stated: “Everybody screamed. It was like a thunderous scream, everyone was laughing [including Jack Warner, pictured above]. That was her little sweet revenge.”

consider: teenagers aren’t apathetic about everything they’re just used to you shitting all over whatever they show excitement about
Teen: *gets a job*
“I GOT THE JOB!”
Parents: Well, when I was your age, I already had 5 jobs and was supporting my family
Teen: *gets all A’s*
“I worked really hard!”
Parents: Well, of course you did, this is the expectation, not a celebration.
probably why so many teens take to social media where they can enthusiastically share their interests and achievements and get positive feedback that their parents never gave
A LITTLE LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
This hit hard
I remember once, when I was in my early 20s, I was an afternoon supervisor at my job, and I worked with mostly teenagers, and the one day this one kid, who was like 15, was bored so I suggested he could clean out the fridge. He did and when he was done I said he did a good job.
After that, this kid was cleaning out the fridge at least once a week, and I was like, “why are you always cleaning the fridge?” Like, I didn’t mind, but it seemed odd. And he said, “one time I cleaned the fridge and you said I did a good job. I wanted to make you proud of me again.”
Literally, I changed the entire way I interacted with teenagers after that. I actually got a package of glitter stars and I would stick them on their nametags when they did a good job, and they loved it.
My manager had commented on how hard these kids work and I said, “they’re starved for positive feedback. They go to school all day then come to work all evening and no one appreciates it because it’s expected of them, but they’re still kids. They need positive feedback from adults in their lives.”
Like, everyone likes feeling appreciated. Everyone likes being complimented and having their efforts be noticed. Another coworker (who was a mother of teenage children), hated that I did this, and said they were too old to be rewarded with stickers, but like… it wasn’t about the stickers. The stickers were just a symbol that their effort was noticed and appreciated. I was just lucky that I learned this at a time when I was still young enough to remember what it was like to be a teenager. I was only 2 years out of highschool at that point and highschool is fucking hard. People forget this as they get older, but ask anyone and almost no one would ever want to go back and do it again, but they expect kids to suck it up because they’re young so they should be able to do school full time, plus homework, and work, and maintain a healthy social life, and sleep, and spend time with family, and do chores and help out at home, and worry about college and relationships and everything else, and then just get shit on all the time and treated like they’re lazy and entitled. And then they wonder why teenagers are apathetic.

In every scooby doo remake they get Fred’s personality all wrong, okay!? He is not the cocky and fearless leader. He lost his brain cells years ago! He’s a himbo to the core! He asks what color pink panther is. He wears a jeans vest (jest?) under his sweater. His bright idea is to split up and look for clues. Not once has that worked and yet he still wants to do it every single fucking time. Please respect the himbo.
Can somebody put in the scene from the 2002 movie where Scooby is disguised as a grandmother and Fred goes “who’s the ugly chick”

Okay so I just watched the new episode of The Chosen today, and I just want to talk about my feelings regarding Mary Magdalene in this episode, how she had had a panic attack triggered by past trauma that caused a downward spiral which lead to running away from the group and going back to her old life for a while. Surely she missed Jesus and the rest of the group, but she felt too ashamed to go back, and then when Simon Peter and Matthew sought her out she finally did come back home, where Jesus freely forgave her and welcomed her back with open arms.
When Mary told Simon and Matthew, "He already fixed me once... and I broke again. I can't face Him," my heart shattered in a million pieces, because I feel like that every time I start slipping up and fall back into my own self-destructive habits and negative self-talk which I've struggled with for so long.
Then, Matthew reminded her of all the good she has done, everyone that she has inspired to be better, including himself. She didn't seem completely convinced, but she was willing to go back with them anyway. When they got back to the campsite, instead of being shamed, she was welcomed back with open arms by everyone. When she was brought to Jesus, she clearly still felt embarrassed and ashamed about "breaking again", as if that made His healing her in the first place mean any less.
Mary told Jesus, "I owe You everything, but I just don't think I can do it- live up to it." But in reply, Jesus simply tells her, "That's true, but you don't have to. I just want your heart. The Father just wants your heart. Give Us that, which you have, and the rest will come in time." He asks her to look up at Him, as she can't even bring herself to look Him in the eye, and He tells her, "I forgive you. It's over," as Mary rushes into His embrace and is healed by His Grace once again.
This scene was the highlight of the whole episode, and perhaps, to me at least, the entire series so far. I think it showed a really important message for those like me who struggle with mental health issues and relapsing and falling back into old habits that you know are wrong but you just keep coming back to. I was bawling my eyes out for half of the episode, because I’ve been there myself, and I saw myself in her struggle. For so much of my life I’ve struggled with poor mental health and low self esteem; there are times when I can't even look at myself in the mirror and say self affirmations like "I love myself" and "I'm worthy of the space I take up", because it feels like a lie. So often I feel unworthy to come back to Jesus, yet He is always there for me, calling me back to Him and reminding me of His infinite love. As He tells Mary, you don’t have to be perfect in this life, that will come much later. Redemption and perfection are a lifelong process, so be kind and patient with yourself. You don't have to beat yourself up for making the same mistakes over and over again. He knows you, He knows your desire to do good, and He will keep lifting you up so you can continue to do good. It’s okay if you slip up again and again and again, as long as you continuously come back to Him. Our Savior won’t shame you for your mistakes, instead He’ll always call you back home and welcome you with open arms, all you have to do is keep coming back to Him, and He will heal you, again and again and again, however many times it takes.
